Abrahams Announces Recruitment Drive for the New York State Police

Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead) announced today that the New York Police Department will accept applications for the department’s entrance exam starting June 4 and lasting until December 1 of this year. The test will be administered in January and February of 2008.

“The New York State Police are an important line of defense in the war on crime, and the more police officers we have, the better,” Abrahams said. “This is not only a smart career choice with great salary and benefits, but also a fantastic opportunity to serve your community and state.”

The State Police offer competitive salaries: during Academy training, an officer receives $50,374; upon graduation, $61,525; after one year, $65,358; and after five years, $77,218.

The work of the State Police ranges from traditional patrol duties on our highways to specially trained investigators conducting sophisticated operations against drug traffickers and other criminals. In many areas of the state, troopers are the primary law enforcement officers and respond to all types of calls.

With more than 4,600 sworn members, and more than 1,000 non-sworn employees, the New York State Police provides a myriad of special services that include: aviation, dedicated interstate patrols, canine patrols, SCUBA, counter terrorism, crime analysis, forensic sciences, forensic crime laboratory, commercial vehicle enforcement, mobile response team (similar to SWAT), narcotics enforcement teams, violent felony warrant squad, marine unit, crisis negotiation teams, accident reconstructionists, drug recognition experts, mobile command post, major crimes unit, auto theft unit, firearms tracing unit, hazardous materials enforcement, and computer crimes unit.
