LEGISLATOR FORD HONORS 2013 TRAILBLAZER IN THE NEW MILLENIUM

Nassau County Legislator Denise Ford recently named Susan Gordon-Ryan, the first female Regional Director for the New York State Parks system, as one of the Nassau County Legislature’s 2013 “Women: Trailblazer in the New Millennium” honorees.

Susan Gordon Ryan began her career as a special education teacher at the Henry Viscardi School in Albertson, NY. Susan had held a variety of professional positions in the field of education, government, and social reform for individuals with disabilities. After her special education career, she worked for the NYS Department of Parks, Recreation & Historical Preservation. She founded the “Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged.”

After her 12-year tenure with the government, she moved to work in the not-for-profit field including corporate and foundation relations at St. Johns University. She coordinated government relations, special events, and fundraising for other not-for-profits, before returning to her roots at Abilities! As Vice President of Development, Susan served as the Chief Deputy Parks Commissioner for Nassau County Parks.

Susan retired in 2008 but has remained very active in the Long Island Community. She currently serves on several boards including the Long Island Power Authority, Sacred Heart Academy Hempstead, NY and the Irish Studies Institute at Molloy College in Rockville Centre, NY, and is a member of the Energia Partnership at Molloy College.
