During the Annual Nassau County Fire Commission Awards Ceremony, the Nassau County Fire Commission presented Bronze and Silver medals to six members of the Floral Park and New Hyde Park Fire Departments for their coordinated efforts and heroic actions in response an emergency situation at a building on Jericho Turnpike in NHP on November 1, 2012.
The Fire Commission presented Silver medals to New Hyde Park Firefighters John Nykiel, John Waldron, and Anthony Mauro. The Silver medal recognizes the “Great Personal Risk” that the firefighters displayed at the scene of the incident.
The Fire Commission also presented Bronze medals to Floral Park Firefighters John Florio, James Dodson, and Vinson Hartenfels. The Bronze medals were awarded for the “Meritorious Personal Risk” taken by these firefighters.
“The actions of these brave firefighters was nothing short extraordinary. They placed themselves in an extremely dangerous situation and acted with the utmost professionalism and courage. Our entire county is proud of them and their brother and sister firefighters,” said Legislator Nicolello.
The following is a brief description of their actions as prepared by the Fire Commission: On November 1, 2012 the members of the New Hyde Park and Floral Park Fire Departments responded to a working house fire at 1217 Jericho Turnpike in New Hyde Park. The firefighters ascended the staircase without the protection of a hose line and under a heavy volume of fire. The three members of the New Hyde Park Fire Department rescued an elderly resident from the front bedroom while the three members of the Floral Park Fire Department rescued an elderly resident from the rear bedroom.
