Nassau County Legislator Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury), joined by members of the Nassau County Dental Society and community members, recently attended the fifth annual “Give Kids a Smile” event. The event provided free dental examinations and oral health education to children ages 3 to 7, with more than 50 dentists, and 100 hygienists and staff members volunteering their time.
“This event provides a much-needed service to children who might not have easy access to necessary dental care,” Jacobs said. “I am humbled by the generosity of the Nassau County Dental Society and its members who donated their time and expertise to help those who need it most.”
“Give Kids a Smile” is the largest outreach program organized by the American Dental Association, operating at more than 2,000 locations nationwide with more than 51,000 dental professionals serving an estimated 500,000 children.
In Nassau County, approximately 1,800 kids were examined, 8 percent of which were found to need urgent and immediate care. Kids were taught about the importance of brushing and flossing, how to make healthy nutritional choices, and were also provided with an entertaining and interactive puppet show.
