HOW TO ESTIMATE YOUR 2013-14 SCHOOL PROPERTY TAXES

(Mineola, NY)  To help homeowners obtain a better understanding of how the upcoming school district spending plans will affect their individual property tax obligations for the 2013-2014 tax year, Acting Nassau County Assessor Jim Davis has created a School Property Tax Calculator that will estimate a home’s share of the school tax pie based on the proposed budgets that will be voted on next week, Tuesday, May 21.

“Over the years I have found that too many homeowners were surprised to learn that the percentage of school taxes they had to pay in October were often higher than the percentage of budget increase they approved in May,” stated Acting Assessor Davis. “My School Property Tax Calculator was created to give homeowners a reasonable estimate of this year’s school tax rates as well as their projected individual tax obligation, so that they can see how school spending plans will truly impact their wallets.”

Homeowners can calculate their estimated 2013-2014 school tax bill obligation by selecting a school district and inputting their property’s Assessed Value (which is .25 percent of the Adjusted Market Value) to the School Property Tax Calculator.  The Assessed Value and tax calculator can be found on the Department of Assessment’s website at http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/estschooltax.

Acting Assessor Davis went on to stress that the School Property Tax Calculator was created as a tool to provide homeowners with a general estimate of projected school property taxes that does not take into account any future assessment adjustments due to Hurricane Sandy, class shifts, changes in the school district tax levy, STAR increases, changes in exemption status, new construction or demolitions, successful grievance challenges, or library tax levies.
