County Clerk Honors U.S. Presidential Scholar Semifinalist
(Mineola, NY) Michael J. Abatemarco of Garden City has been named one of approximately 560 semifinalists in the 2010 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program from among the more than 3000 candidates nationwide. Semifinalists are selected based on superior academic achievements, leadership qualities, personal character and involvement in community activities. In recognition of this outstanding honor, Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell presented Michael with a County Citation.
Michael, the Valedictorian of this year’s graduating class at Garden City High School, is also a National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, Rensselaer Medalist and Siemens Science Contest Semifinalist. In addition to his numerous academic achievements, Michael has also demonstrated great commitment to community service as evident through his attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, his participation in two National Mission Trips to Alabama and the Appalachian Regions of eastern Kentucky, his service on his school’s Executive Board of Peer AIDS Educators, and as the organizer and Captain of a Swim Across America team raising awareness and funds for cancer research. Michael is extremely active in many extracurricular activities including being Drum Major of his school’s marching band, a Third Degree Black Belt in Karate, Principal Baritone Saxophonist in the Wind and Jazz Ensembles, and a varsity level swimmer and diver. Prior to attending Harvard University in the fall, Michael will be working this summer with a nonprofit organization as part of Bank of America Student Leaders Program.
