County Clerk O’Connell: Volunteer Lawyers Needed
(Mineola, NY) Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell is looking for volunteer lawyers from the community to assist the court system in providing legal advice and assistance to residents. With the economic downturn many people are representing themselves in a variety of legal proceedings. The County Clerk’s office has seen a dramatic increase in the number of people needing legal help. Just recently, the New York State Unified Court System has established the Volunteer Attorney Program. The program will offer free consultations to people representing themselves to ensure they have legal advice to assist them through legal proceedings.
Volunteer lawyers will be expected to answer questions, assist in filling out legal forms, and help prepare for court hearings and interpretation of court documents. Any attorneys who can offer their time and services are urged to participate in this worthwhile program. Additional information about the program can be found at www.courts.state.ny.us/attorneys/volunteer.shtml or by calling 646-386-5900.
