The Office of the Nassau County Attorney provides professional, efficient and thorough legal representation to the County, its elected officials, officers, boards, department and agencies, including all legal matters related to its operations and compliance with federal, state
and local laws.

The Nassau County Department of Law is headed by Nassau County Attorney Carnell T. Foskey. County Executive Edward P. Mangano appointed the County Attorney on November 12, 2013; the appointment was unanimously confirmed by the Nassau County Legislature on December 27, 2013. Chief Deputy County Attorney Lisa LoCurto works with the County Attorney on all administrative matters.

The Office includes Deputy County Attorneys, support staff and investigators, all overseen by County Attorney Carnell T. Foskey. The County Attorney vigorously defends against all civil actions and proceedings brought against or by Nassau County. The Office provides legal representation in transactional matters and provides legal advice to all Nassau County agencies and departments. Responsibilities include the negotiation, preparation and review of contracts, the completion of comprehensive legal research projects, the drafting of Local Laws and Resolutions, and the crafting of many opinion letters for the various departments and agencies of Nassau County.

The Office defends all civil matters brought against the County, including negligence, civil rights, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, insurance coverage, labor law, property recovery, Article 78 proceedings, administrative hearings, arbitrations involving either the interpretation of various collective bargaining agreements or the discipline of employees, representation of the Nassau County Board of Elections in all matters involving the interpretation and application of the New York State Election Law, and any other civil matter involving the County and its various departments and functions.

Deputy County Attorneys in Family Court handle proceedings involving juvenile delinquency, parental abuse and neglect, persons in need of supervision (PINS), and matters relating to the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act and payments that are owed to Nassau County residents by persons residing out of state.

The Office also provides legal assistance in the sale of county liens representing properties foreclosed for failure to pay back taxes. It represents the County in condemnation proceedings and other matters necessary to secure property for the public good. The Office actively represents the County’s interests in court in connection with challenges to the assessment of real property and taxes. The Office of the Nassau County Attorney has been certified by the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board as an Accredited Provider of continuing legal education in the State of New York.
