Edward P Mangano

On January 1, 2010, Edward P. Mangano was sworn into office as Nassau County Executive. That same day, the County Executive kept his pledge to taxpayers by repealing Nassau County’s Home Energy Tax – the equivalent of a 5% property tax reduction for homeowners. Mr. Mangano is the first County Executive to place tax dollars back in the pockets of our residents.

Ed Mangano believes that high taxes kill jobs. That is why County Executive Mangano has held the line on County property taxes every year since taking office, eliminated a 16.5% property tax increase planned by the prior administration and even stopped a County Food Tax dead in its tracks. Nassau County was the highest-taxed county in the nation before Ed Mangano took office - that is no longer the case due to his cost-saving policies.  In fact, Nassau County won the New York State Local Government Efficiency Award.

Throughout his term as County Executive, Mr. Mangano has focused on rebuilding Nassau County without asking taxpayers to foot the bill for the $378 million deficit he inherited from the prior administration.  To accomplish this, County Executive Mangano cut over $330 million in wasteful spending and launched nationally recognized public-private partnerships – savings taxpayers millions of dollars and generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.  Some of the notable public-private partnerships are:

  • Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum - a successful public-private-partnership with Forest City Ratner Companies was formed to transform the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum into a world-class sports-entertainment destination at no cost to taxpayers.  When completed, the facility will host the New York Islanders, Brooklyn Nets, New York Yankee Coaching Clinics, Children Shows, Heavyweight Boxing championship tournaments, minor league hockey and college basketball games as well as an exciting array of star-studded performers and family-fun entertainment.  Plaza development will include a performing arts theatre, ice rink, movie theatre, bowling alley and theme restaurants.
  • New Indoor Ice Skating Rinks – a successful public-private partnership was formed to build new indoor twin ice skating rinks and an outdoor rink at Eisenhower Park without any cost to the taxpayer.  This facility is suitable to host national events.
  • New Athletic Fields – a successful public-private partnership with Molloy College resulted in the construction of new athletic fields at Mitchel Athletic Complex - all constructed without taxpayer dollars and open for use by our residents.
  • Cosmos Practice Field – a successful public-private partnership was formed by the New York Cosmo’s to build a new soccer field and bring world-class soccer practice to Mitchel Athletic Complex - all constructed without taxpayer dollars and open for use by our residents. 
  • NICE Bus - a successful public-private-partnership for Nassau’s bus system began January 1, 2012 when Veolia Transportation was selected to run day to day operations. This partnership provides riders with reliable service, expanded routes and saves taxpayers over $30 million a year.
  • Healthcare at the Jail - a successful public-private-partnership can be found at the County jail where residents are saving nearly $7 million annually by eliminating costly transportation costs through the delivery of inmate health care services in the jail.

County Executive Mangano has focused on rebuilding Nassau County’s economy by creating jobs that put people back to work. Mr. Mangano and his economic development team have helped create and retain 20,000 private sector jobs in Nassau County. In fact, Nassau County recently won a heated competition with the State of New Jersey for the International Headquarters of Hain Celestial.  The County has also attracted new homeland security jobs, high-tech jobs, as well as film and television industry jobs to the former Grumman-Navy property in Nassau. In 2013, the New York State Department of Labor reported that Nassau County leads the State of New York in terms of job growth and employment.  In fact, Nassau County has the lowest unemployment rate in the region.

County Executive Mangano has earned praise for his efforts in creating new housing opportunities for veterans as well as for converting empty commercial office space into affordable rental units for young people and seniors.  Together, these initiatives are helping make Nassau County a better place to live, work and raise a family.

County Executive Mangano’s accomplishments also include raising funds from the private sector to keep the Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged alive after having seen all funding eliminated by the State of New York in 2011.  A commitment to all of Nassau's children is evident from County Executive Mangano's initiatives that also include affordable athletic opportunities in baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis and soccer as well as new playgrounds and an affordable summer recreation program at Nassau County parks. 

In October 2012, Nassau County was hit with the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy. County Executive Mangano led the charge to protect human life and advocated for Congress to pass the necessary funds for residents to begin to recover and rebuild in storm ravaged areas. Mr. Mangano ensured that shelters, meal distribution sites, hot showers, laundry facilities, insurance and FEMA assistance centers were available for residents seeking assistance.The administration continues to remind residents of its Family and Friends Sheltering initiative.

Mr. Mangano joined with the chaplains of Nassau’s police and fire departments to create a Hurricane Recovery Fund that assists victims of the super storm. Businesses were also hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.  To support small businesses in recovering from storm damage, County Executive Mangano opened a Nassau County Business Recovery Center.

County Executive Mangano was re-elected Nassau County Executive on November 5, 2013.  Prior to becoming County Executive, Ed Mangano gained extensive experience as a County Legislator, where he served the 17th Legislative District for seven terms until leaving the position in 2009 to become County Executive.  As a Legislator, Ed helped revitalize the former Grumman Property and attract more than 15,000 jobs to the site. From establishing a Senior Citizen and Community Center, to preserving and protecting open space, Ed Mangano has always been a strong leader for Nassau residents.

Raised in Bethpage, New York, County Executive Mangano began his professional career as a janitor while putting himself through college. A graduate of Hofstra University and Hofstra School of Law, Ed Mangano was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1988. He went on to have a successful career in publishing newspapers, as well as serving as counsel to Rivkin Radler, LLP for nine years. Ed also has been active in many charitable and fraternal organizations.

County Executive Ed Mangano resides in Bethpage with his wife, Linda, and two sons, Salvatore and Alexander.
