Mangano Delivers $10 Million in 2010 to Cedar Creek Sewage Treatment Plant

Cedar Creek Press ConferenceMineola, NY - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today has announced that he will deliver $10 million in new equipment to the Cedar Creek Sewage Treatment Plant to begin to repair the troubled facility.

“For far too long, this facility has been neglected,” said Mangano. “The time has come to fix Cedar Creek.”

As part of an amendment to the 2010 Capital Plan, the Cedar Creek Sewage Treatment Plant will see $27 million worth of improvements over the next four years including at least $2 million in new equipment this year. Additional plant workers needed to fill a three-year shortage will also be hired there, Mangano said.

Planned improvements to the plant include two new belt filter presses which remove sludge from the wastewater and an update to the plant’s odor control system

The replacements will not only alleviate the problem of worn, ineffective machines but the new technology will also reduce hauling and disposal costs, Mangano said.

According to notices of violation issued by the state Department of Environmental Conservation last year, the plant accidentally discharged 25,000 gallons of untreated wastewater into Cedar Creek in November 2008 and went over its discharge limit three times in 2007 and twice in 2009.

“As we continue to review the efficiency of every department in the County, we affirmed that more resources were needed at the sewer treatment plant,” Mangano added. “When it comes to the health and welfare of our residents, there’s no time to waste. The prior administration let this go on far too long.”

Other upcoming renovations to the plant include new roofs on some of the 30-year-old buildings and various storm water projects, and will address odor issues and accidental discharges.
