Mangano Announces Purchase of Grossmann’s Farm

Beloved Community Landmark to Remain in Malverne

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano today announced the County’s purchase of Grossman’s Farm, a five-acre family farm located on Hempstead Avenue in Malverne. The farm was acquired through the County’s 2006 Environmental Bond Act, a $150 million environmental program that has enabled Nassau County to purchase and protect open space, renovate parks, improve storm water quality and clean up Brownfield properties.

“Grossmann’s Farm has been an important part of the Malverne community for generations and this purchase means that it will remain a working farm forever,” said Mangano. “By preserving our remaining open spaces, such as Grossmann’s Farm, we are investing in our quality of life here in Nassau County and ensuring that future generations can enjoy them.”

Nassau County purchased the property for $6,538,233. As part of the purchase agreement, which subdivided the property into three sections, the Grossmann family will retain .2 acres of the property, which includes the original homestead. In addition, the Village of Malverne will obtain .4 of an acre for its use.

Grossmann’s Farm has been a Malverne community fixture since 1895, when John Grossmann emigrated from Germany and established the farm. Since then, four generations of the Grossmann family have operated the farm. The County also plans to permit the operation of a famers market on the property, to be run by the Long Island Growers Market. An RFP was issued in June 2009 to select a vendor for the management of the farm.
