Nassau County, Village Of Freeport To Establish Water Trail

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano has announced that Nassau will partner with the Village of Freeport to design and build a recreational water trail that would extend from one of Nassau’s South Shores to the other, connecting many of its bays and estuaries.

“Much of Nassau County’s beauty is found along these routes, traveling through pristine wetland areas that recall the days before suburban sprawl,” said Mangano. “We must provide every opportunity to see these places where nature still rules.”

Kayakers, boaters and those in canoes will be able to navigate the South Shore Water Trail with maps and brochures. Participants will enjoy freshwater spigots at the various launch sites.

The County would contribute $50,000 in funds from the $100 million Environmental Bond Act approved by residents in 2006, for this parkland improvement. The Village of Freeport will match that amount with funds from a state grant it was recently awarded. The Village will be responsible for all future maintenance of the trail.

“My administration will continue to seek out every possible chance we can find to allow safe, responsible access to these areas for the people,” said Mangano.

The project is expected to be approved by the Nassau County Legislature later this month.
