Mangano: Double-Digit Reduction In Major Crime

Mangano announces a double digit reduction in major crime

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey today announced a countywide 10.87% decrease in major crime. This reduction comes at a time when Nassau County is operating with 125 fewer non-patrol positions in the police department. Due to the efforts of the County Executive to save taxpayers $20 million annually, administrative functions were consolidated while keeping the same number of patrol officers on the streets of Nassau County.

“At a time when many areas around the country are seeing an increase in crime because of the economy, it gives me great pleasure to announce that we have seen a decrease in major crime of 10.87% countywide,” said County Executive Mangano. “The brave men and women of our police departments should be commended for their tireless efforts to keep Nassau families and seniors safe.”

The Nassau County Police Department indicated that the major crime reduction from 2009 to 2010 includes a 12.9% decrease in murder, 18.6% reduction in sex crimes, and a 13.2% reduction in robbery crimes. Nassau County remains the safest county of its size in America and significantly safer than it was a year ago.

“Much of our success has been a direct result of our utilization of intelligence led policing, which enables us to apply resources and manpower where needed based on crime analysis and intelligence,” said Police Commissioner Mulvey. “The implementation of our Real Time Intel System has been a tremendous benefit on our crime fighting techniques. It has been a true communications asset for the patrol officers on our streets.”

“The most important responsibility of government is to protect the citizens it serves,” said County Executive Mangano. “Achieving this significant crime reduction, while right sizing government is a true victory for the taxpayers of Nassau County.”
