Mangano: County Operating With 610 Fewer Positions

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that the County is officially operating with 610 fewer positions than last year. County Executive Mangano’s 2011 Balanced County Budget takes the bold steps necessary to reduce Nassau’s headcount to the lowest level since the 1950s. As a result, $55 million in labor savings will be achieved in 2011 through the elimination of 400 positions and by leaving 210 additional positions unfilled for the year.

“The Legislature and I cut over $55 million in wasteful spending by reducing Nassau’s workforce to the lowest level since the 1950s,” said Mangano. “Due to my consolidation of government functions and administrative responsibilities, Nassau will operate in this year with 610 fewer positions.”

In an effort to dispel any misinformation regarding the 2011 Balanced County Budget, here are some facts:

  • County Executive Ed Mangano’s 2011 Balanced County Budget rescues Nassau taxpayers from a $343 million deficit caused by years of mismanagement, a poor economy and empty promises of paying for labor deals with reckless disregard for taxpayers ability to pay.

  • Although Mangano asked the Legislature to empower him to order $61 million in labor savings through the adoption of the Taxpayer Protection Act, the Legislature instead adopted a balanced budget with $61 million in budget contingencies pending ongoing labor saving negotiations.

  • Despite ongoing labor negotiations to achieve taxpayer savings, the 2011 Balanced County Budget includes $55 million in labor savings achieved by cutting 400 positions, from 8,810 in 2010 to 8,410 in 2011, and by managing with less 210 unfilled budgeted positions. As a result:

  • 125 non-patrol police positions were eliminated in the 2011 budget by moving officers from desk duty to the streets, saving $20 million;

  • 275 other county employee positions were eliminated in the 2011 budget, saving $20 million; and

  • 210 budgeted positions remain unfilled for 2011. A nonessential hiring freeze will result in $15 million in additional savings.

  • County Executive Mangano’s 2011 Balanced County Budget contains no increase in property taxes, cuts wasteful spending by $148 million, exposes and fixes the $28 million sewer authority deficit, and consolidates departments and administrative functions.

  • As promised, residents will no longer be burdened by the Home Energy Tax that Mangano repealed immediately upon taking office as County Executive.

  • County Executive Mangano and the Legislature were elected to represent the people of Nassau County and bring fiscal responsibility back to this great County.
