Mangano Declares October As "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" In Nassau County

Historic Theodore Roosevelt Building to be Illuminated in Ceremony

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano will be joined by Geri Barish, Executive Director of Hewlett House and President of “1 in 9” Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition; Christine Hodyl, DO, from South Nassau Communities Hospital’s Complete Women’s Imaging; and Joe Qualiatao, CEO of South Nassau Communities Hospital to host a ceremony on Wednesday, October 5, 2010 to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Nassau County.

The program will be held at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building and will include remarks by County Executive Mangano. When there is sufficient darkness, all in attendance will gather outside for the official “Pink Illumination” of the building’s dome.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an initiative to increase awareness of breast cancer issues, especially the importance of early detection. “This event serves not only as a tribute to those who have been affected by breast cancer, but also as a reminder for each and every one of us to carry the message of the importance of early detection,” said County Executive Mangano. “Early detection is the key in fighting this disease – not only in October but throughout the entire year.”

Guests are invited to arrive at 5:30 p.m. for light refreshments, followed by a brief program in the Ceremonial Chambers.  The illumination will take place at approximately 6:30 p.m.  All are invited to attend.
