County Executive Mangano And DA Rice Announce New Heroin Prevention And Education Website For Teens, Parents And Educators

and harsh realities about heroin use in Nassau County

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice joined the County’s Heroin Prevention Task Force today to announce the launch of the Nassau County Heroin Prevention Task Force’s new website, HeroinPrevention.com. Recognizing that the Internet is often the primary research and education source, the site educates young adults about the realities of heroin use, informs parents and educators of the warning signs of heroin addiction, and provides useful information about treatment options and providers.

The website is split into three sections

• §  Parents and Community - provides helpful links and documents on how to keep your child drug free, strategies for talking to your child about drugs, information on the Nassau County Police Department’s drug analysis program, and the physical and behavioral signs of drug use.
• §  Teens and Young Adults - features the real life facts about heroin, its effects on the brain and body, signs of drug use, symptoms of overdose, and information on support groups.
• §  Treatment and Prevention - lists all detox, inpatient, outpatient, and counseling centers across Long Island, as well as contact information and links for each member agency of the task force.

 “Each month, our community tragically loses young people to heroin overdoses and other heroin-related deaths,” said County Executive Ed Mangano.  “In creating this unique website I believe that we have built a one-stop shop for kids, young adults, parents, and educators to get the facts about heroin prevention and drug treatment.”

The Nassau County Heroin Prevention Task Force is a partnership of community, social and government agencies dedicated to reducing the demand for heroin in our communities, to educating our citizens of the prevalence of the heroin problem, the signs and symptoms of addiction, and the resources available, and to eliminating drug related crime in our communities through public education, advocacy, media, law enforcement, and legislation.
