Mangano Announces Assessment Review Commission (ARC) Moves To New Location

Total Reform of Broken Property Tax Assessment Continues,

All Assessment Operations Now in One Location for Benefit of Taxpayers

As part of his efforts to completely reform the broken, costly property tax assessment system in Nassau, County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced the Assessment Review Commission (ARC) has moved to 240 Old Country Rd. in Mineola, now under the same roof as the County Department of Assessment. The move helps improve communications and provides a more convenient and efficient location for taxpayers looking to question their property tax assessments.

“We inherited a system that was dysfunctional in every way,” said Mangano. “This new location for the ARC is another important step in the total transformation of the broken property tax assessment system that has pushed Nassau County into fiscal instability. I promised to completely reform this assessment system, and that is exactly what I have been doing,”

Mangano has made reforming Nassau’s property tax assessment system a cornerstone of his administration. He has ordered the system changed from annual to cyclical and implemented other reforms to overhaul the system.

The Legislature recently passed Mangano's plan to eliminate the County Guarantee, which requires schools and towns that receive tax dollars in error, to pay back those tax dollars. This plan does not take effect until 2013, thereby allowing over two years for the reforms passed earlier this year to take effect and reduce liability for all.

Each step Mangano has taken plays an important role in the transformation of the system, including placing ARC closer to the County’s Department of Assessment.
