Mangano, Mulvey And Rice Announce Gun Buy Back Initiative

Mineola, NY - Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano joined Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence W. Mulvey and Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice, to announce a “Gun Buy Back” initiative, as part of their ongoing efforts to combat illegal handgun violence. The Gun Buy Back program will take place on Saturday, January 30, 2010.

The success of the four previous Gun Buyback initiatives resulted in more than 1,100 illegal guns taken off the streets of Nassau County. The Gun Buy Back Program is strictly anonymous and individuals will be paid $200 cash per turned in operable handgun. Not accepted are: licensed guns, BB Guns, air pistols, long guns and replicas. Guns transported by car must be transported in the trunk of the car and must be unloaded and put in a plastic/paper bag or in a shoe box. Forfeiture funds from the Nassau County Police Department and District Attorney’s Office are utilized to fund the program.

“This program has proven to be effective in getting guns off our streets before they fall into the wrong hands,” said County Executive Mangano. “Community support is critical to the success of this program, and we appreciate the assistance of the members of the clergy who are participating in this effort. By working together, we can ensure that Nassau County remains a safe place to live and raise a family.”

The location for the January 30th Gun Buy Back is the Shiloh Baptist Church, located at 96 North Centre Avenue in Rockville Centre from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
