Mangano Announces: New York State Parks Group Honors Nassau County's Renovation Work At Washington Avenue Park In Seaford

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced today that the New York State Recreation and Parks Society granted its Outstanding Facility Award to the newly renovated Washington Avenue Park in Seaford.

Under the direction of County Executive Mangano, this 4-acre park was completely rehabilitated in 2010 after years of neglect. The two baseball fields were redone with artificial turf infields, newly seeded outfields, an irrigation system, new dugouts, new spectator stands, and new fencing. Elsewhere in the park, the work included a new playground with separate areas for preschoolers and older children; new pathways and a limited fitness trail; and a new restroom facility. The park, which serves as home for the local Little League, is located on Jerusalem and Washington avenues.

Established in 1940 and based in Saratoga Springs, the Recreation and Parks Society is a non-profit group that promotes “quality recreation and park opportunities” through education, training, technical assistance and other support to local, county, state and federal recreation and park providers.

“I am very pleased to see that the Recreation and Parks Society has seen fit to recognize our Parks Department for an award,” said County Executive Mangano. “For years, Washington Avenue Park was a subpar facility, and that was unacceptable to me. Our parks are an important part of the quality of life in Nassau County and a great deal of planning and hard work is going into the overhaul of our parks system under my administration. The work at Washington Avenue Park is just one of dozens of parks projects that have either been completed, are under way, or are in the planning stage.”

Other Nassau County parks that have undergone improvements or will be undergoing work include Bay Park in East Rockaway; Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn-North Hills; Eisenhower Park in East Meadow; Nickerson Beach Park in Lido; Rev. Arthur Mackey Sr. Park in Roosevelt; Stannards Brook Park in Port Washington; and Wantagh Park in Wantagh.
