Mangano Announces Success of H.A.L.T “Community Watch”

Sweep of Probationers in Nassau Ends with Drug Arrest

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano has announced the success of “Community Watch 2” as part of the County’s Operation H.A.L.T. (Heroin Abuse Location & Targeting) program.

Under the direction of the Nassau County Probation Department and the Nassau County Police Department’s Lead Development Center, “Community Watch 2” targeted probationers throughout the Third Precinct. The sweep, the second one conducted this year, consisted of home visits to fifty probationers who reside in Nassau County, and resulted in the arrest of a probationer for possession of narcotics.

“We are sending a message to all probationers in Nassau County that they must comply with the conditions of their probation, or there will be serious consequences,” said County Executive Mangano.

This is the start of an aggressive campaign authorized by County Executive Mangano earlier this year to combat heroin use. Operation H.A.L.T is comprised of three initiatives:  enforcement, awareness, and education. The Nassau County Probation Department holds regular Community Watch visits and continues to work with the Police Department on initiatives such as Nightwatch, along with DWI and Sex Offender sweeps in targeted areas as part of Operation H.A.L.T.

“I applaud the efforts of the Probation Department in staying vigilant in keeping our neighborhoods safe,” said Mangano.
