Mangano joins campaign to stop teenage drownings

“No Lifeguards – No Swimming – No Joke!”

Public Service Announcement Could Save Lives

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today joined Long Beach City Manager Charles T. Theofan to announce the City of Long Beach’s campaign to distribute a public service announcement (PSA) to schools to educate children about the dangers of swimming when lifeguards are not on duty.

The nine-minute film depicts teens visiting the beach when lifeguards are off duty, and the realization that their friend is missing. A visual illustration of powerful rip currents with lifeguards’ instructions on how to calmly and safely swim out of the water sets the tone for the film. Both enlightening and frightening, the information provided in the film could save lives.

Copies of the locally filmed PSA were mailed to New York City and Long Island school districts in March.

“Living on Long Island provides us with great opportunities to enjoy the water, and with school ending soon teenagers will be heading out to our local beaches. This is why the months between May and August are particularly critical when it comes to drowning,” said County Executive Ed Mangano. “This Public Service Announcement can help save lives. It sends a powerful but simple message, and it is my hope schools across Long Island and New York City will view this with their students and help us get this important message out before the summer starts.”
