Thanks Selden Teenager for Fundraising Efforts to Save the Games

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today honored athlete Erica Mones during a ceremony held before the start of the 2011 Nassau County Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged. Erica raised $160 for the Committee to Save the Games by designing a book of original poetry and selling copies to friends and family.

Erica, who competes in track events, has participated in the Games for the Physically Challenged since she was five years old.

“I am so proud of Erica and her truly selfless act, which is a clear indication of how special of a person she is. I thank her for her generosity and I wish her and all our athletes good luck at this year’s Games,” said County Executive Mangano.

After New York State announced a plan to eliminate all funding for the Empire State Games, County Executive Mangano stepped in to save the Games by creating the Committee to Save the Games, chaired by Disability Opportunity Fund President & CEO Charles D. Hammerman. Following a number of successful fundraisers and thanks to the generosity of local businesses and schools, along with in-kind resources from Nassau County, the Games continue for a 27th year.

The Opening Ceremonies for 2011 Nassau County Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged were held on June 2nd at Mitchel Athletic Complex and Nassau Community College. Athletes will compete in track, field, slalom, swimming, wheelchair basketball and table tennis through Saturday, June 4th. Participants, ranging in age from 5 to 21, face disabilities of blind, visually impaired, deaf, hearing impaired, spinal cord injured, amputees and those who have cerebral palsy, dwarfism and other physical disabilities.
