Franklin Square Residents Go Above and Beyond for Athletes

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano thanked Sandi and George Silkes of Franklin Square for their generosity in collecting gifts and prizes for athletes participating in the 2011 Nassau County Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged.

At the conclusion of the Games each year, the Silkes begin collecting prizes until the day of the Opening Ceremonies the following year. Prizes include stuffed animals, games, electronics, and t-shirts and are paid for entirely out of the Silkes’ personal budget.

“We asked the public to get involved to help keep the Empire State Games alive, and the Silkes came through,” said County Executive Mangano. “It is because of the support and generosity of people like them that we were able to have a very successful Games this year and I thank the Silkes for their kindness.”
