Week of Blood Drives, Remembrance Ceremony & New Firefighter Museum Exhibit & Gala
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced a series of events commemorating the September 11, 2001 Attack on America. Events will begin on Tuesday, September 6th when Long Island Radio Station’s WBAB and BLI team up with Long Island Blood Services to host a series of Blood Drives at various locations throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties with a goal of obtaining 2,977 pints of blood to represent the 2,977 lives lost on that tragic day. On the following day, Wednesday, September 7th, Nassau County will host Long Island’s largest 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at 7:00 p.m. in Eisenhower Park. Two days later, the Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center will open their newest exhibit - Lives of Service: Celebrating the Heroes of September 11th, at their Annual Badge of Courage Gala on Friday, September 9, 2011, with the Memorial Service beginning at 6:00 p.m.
“Ten years ago, the entire nation came together to support one another in unprecedented ways after the tragic events that transpired the morning of September 11, 2001,” said County Executive Mangano. “This year we will once again renew that sense of unity by participating in the commemorative events on the 10th Anniversary of this Attack on America and remember those who were lost.”
Blood Drives:
With the 10th Anniversary of September 11th quickly approaching, WBAB, BLI, Long Island Blood Services and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano are encouraging Long Islanders to commemorate the 10th Anniversary by “Giving Life for Lives Lost” and donate blood in honor and remembrance of the thousands of men, women, and children affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Each pint of blood donated can potentially save the lives of three people through the use of blood and blood products.
The need for blood is constant due its shelf life of just 42 days. Approximately five million Americans receive blood transfusions every year, and the only place to get this precious resource is from the generosity of volunteer blood donors. The “Give Life for Lives Lost” blood drive will aid those who now suffer with debilitating illness after bravely serving on 9/11 and during the months and years thereafter. Individuals who donate their blood are able to honor family members, friends and loved ones in a thoughtful way.
You can give blood to honor the memory of those lost on 9/11 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (unless specified otherwise) at the following locations throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties:
Tuesday, September 6: Sponsored by Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund
Wednesday, September 7: Sponsored by Blackman Plumbing
Thursday, September 8:
