Mangano celebrates ukrainian independence day in Nassau

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano joined members of Nassau’s Ukrainian-American community at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building today to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Ukrainian independence. The County Executive and representatives from local Ukrainian-American organizations participated in a ceremony that included the raising of the Ukrainian flag opposite the American flag in commemoration of the day.

On August 24, 1991, the Ukrainian Parliament established an independent state after the fall of the Soviet Union. More than 90% of Ukraine’s citizens voted for independence in a nationwide referendum held in December of that same year.

“Twenty years have passed since the restoration of Ukraine’s independence. During this time, the Ukrainian people have continued to work to make their country an important partner of the world’s community of free and democratic countries,” said County Executive Mangano. “Here in the United States, Ukrainian-Americans have made tremendous contributions to this country, while preserving their own rich history and heritage. I am honored to celebrate with Ukrainian-Americans here in Nassau County on this 20th Anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.”
