Mangano Marks September 11th Anniversary With Candlelight Ceremony

Announces Flags to be Flown At Half Staff throughout County

With the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 approaching, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano honored the memory of those lost at the County’s annual 9/11 Sunset Ceremony at Eisenhower Park, held on Tuesday, September 7. Mangano has also announced that all County flags will be lowered to half-staff from September 10 through September 12.

“These are but small acts we undertake to honor the innocent victims of the September 11 attacks on our country,” said Mangano. “What is most important is that we continue to uphold these traditions, and never forget the people who were killed that day.”

Each year, the names of Nassau residents lost in the attacks are read by their family members at Nassau’s 9/11 Memorial adjacent to the lake at Eisenhower Park. The memorial features two semi-transparent aluminum towers, representing the World Trade Center towers, rising 30 feet from a fountain, and also contains two pieces of steel recovered from the World Trade Center.

“I want to thank all of the volunteers and committee members who made this ceremony, and this monument, a reality,” said Mangano. “It is important for us to have a common location where we can grieve, and where people can come and be reminded of that day and pause to reflect.”

The event was sponsored by the 9/11 Memorial Foundation Committee, the Nassau County Department Parks, Recreation and Museums, and McCourt and Trudden Funeral Home.

“This ceremony evokes painful memories, but reminds us all that we must remain aware of life’s fragile nature,” said Mangano.
