Mangano Finds A Fix For Jackson Avenue

Deal to transfer ownership to Town of Oyster Bay and Begin Repairs Shortly

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano today announced that his administration has ended the long saga of Jackson Avenue in Syosset, and much needed road repairs will begin before the end of 2010. An emergency resolution has been sent to the Nassau County Legislature that will transfer ownership of the road to the Town of Oyster Bay.

“The prior administration dropped the ball on this project when they let a federal grant slip through their hands last year,” said Mangano. “We have worked hard since taking office to find a way to fix Jackson Avenue, and today I am proud to announce that we have accomplished that goal.”

Mangano amended the County’s Capital Project Budget and allocated $3 million to the project. The total cost of the project will be shared with Town of Oyster Bay, which will be responsible for all phases of construction. The Town of Oyster Bay will incur any costs over the $3 million pledged by Nassau County.

In 2009, the County looked to use capital funds and a $3 million transportation grant to fund the project. Mistakes by the Suozzi administration left the County—and Syosset residents—scrambling to find a way to repair the road.

Mangano also thanked Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto, who worked with the administration to find a way to move the Jackson Ave. project forward.

“This is an example of good government, and finding ways to save taxpayer dollars,” said Mangano. “By sharing the costs associated with these sorely needed improvements, the people are well served. I am proud of the work we have done for the people. This has been a long time in the making.”
