Mangano To Host Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Commemoration

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano, the honorary Chairperson of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration Committee of Nassau County, Inc., announces a number of commemorative events will take place January 14th through January 16th, 2012 as part of the 27th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration. The County Executive invites members of the public to attend.

Theatrical Presentation, “A Whistle in Mississippi” – African American Museum of Nassau County, 110 N. Franklin St., Hempstead, New York 11550; Saturday, January 14th, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5; free for senior citizens and students with school I.D.

Interfaith Celebration, “Love, Peace, and Justice” – St. Brigid’s Roman Catholic Church, 75 Post Avenue, Westbury, New York, 11590; Sunday, January 15th, 2012 – 6:30 p.m.

27 Annual Awards and Scholarship Luncheon, – Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 101 James Doolittle Blvd., Uniondale, NY, 11553; Monday January 17th, 2012; 11:30 a.m.; $60 per ticket.

County Executive Mangano will be the keynote speaker at the annual scholarship awards luncheon, where individuals will be recognized for their efforts in fostering the social and philosophical values of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Freedom Riders will be present at the Scholarship Luncheon and at events throughout the weekend.

“Through Dr. King’s values and ideals, we understand his message of equality, nonviolence, justice and community action,” said County Executive Mangano. “This day is a time to remember his fight for the dignity of all races and people and a time to remember that we too, can make a difference here in Nassau County and beyond.”
