Mangano Announces Proceeds From Sale Of County Road To Supplement Veteran Housing Renovations

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced that the County Legislature approved his plans for the sale of a County road to Avalon Bay for their development in Garden City. Sale proceeds will fund improvements to Nassau’s development of veterans’ housing at Mitchel Field in Uniondale.

My administration is providing affordable housing for our nation’s heroes and their families right here in Nassau County, because even one homeless veteran is one too many,” said County Executive Mangano. “No veteran should be left homeless. It is my hope that our program will serve as a national model that recognizes veterans for their selfless service and dedication to our nation.”

The County took ownership of the property on April 1, 2011 from the United States Navy. The County has begun the process of renovating the homes and locating veterans and their families to occupy the homes, which are two-story, three bedroom duplex units.

The property, which features 18 single family homes and 42 duplex units, was originally constructed to house active service members at the Mitchel Field Air Base and though the air base has closed it has and will continue to house veterans and their families. The 42 duplex units will be available to veterans and their families, while the additional 18 single family homes will be renovated for use by active military personnel and their families.

The renovations are an ongoing process and as units are renovated, they become available for occupancy. Currently, eight of the homes have completed renovations and are all now occupied. With the proceeds from the sale of the road, ten more homes will be able to begin the renovation process.

Nassau County is working closely with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (V.A.) and the Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI) to secure veterans eligible for the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program that provides Housing Choice Vouchers for qualified veterans. In addition to working with the V.A. and the CDCLI, the County is also working with the local military bases as well as the Automated Housing Referral Network (AHRN), the official housing referral system used by military housing offices, in order to locate occupants for these homes.

To obtain vouchers for these homes, veterans should contact Mary Kelly at the VA at (631) 241-6182 and active military should contact the Nassau County Office of Real Estate Services at (516) 571-4207.
