Mangano: Seniors Who Turn 65 In 2012 Can File For The Enhanced STAR Exemption This Year

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today reminded seniors who turn 65 in 2012 that they can apply for Enhanced STAR benefits before the January 3, 2012 deadline for submitting property tax exemptions for the 2012-2013 school and general fund tax year.

“Each year, dozens of qualifying homeowners choose not to file for an Enhanced STAR Exemption because they believe that they must first reach the age of 65 before they file,” said County Executive Edward Mangano. “I want to remind seniors that as long as you are 64 years of age and meet the Enhanced STAR income requirement, you will be eligible to apply before the end of the filing period next week.”

To receive the Enhanced STAR property tax exemption for the 2012-2013 tax year, the applicant must be 65-years old as of December 31 of the year in which the exemption will begin with an annual household income in 2010 of $79,050 or less.

To learn more about Nassau County's property tax relief programs or to obtain an exemption application, County Executive Mangano urges homeowners to contact the Department of Assessment at (516) 571-1500 or download forms and information from its website at www.mynassauproperty.com.
