Mangano, Nassau County Secure Funding For North Hempstead Senior Citizen Bus Service

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced today that Nassau County will soon begin assisting the Town of North Hempstead in providing critical transportation services for senior citizens. The County will lend its recognition as a Designated Recipient for Federal Transit Authority (FTA) grants and will award the funds to the Town of North Hempstead for senior citizen transportation.

Nassau County will also receive matching funds from New York State that will be used to purchase new buses for the Town’s Department of Community Services senior bus program. The program transports North Hempstead seniors, free of charge, to community centers and special North Hempstead senior programs and events.

“Nassau County is committed to ensuring senior citizens receive free transportation to social events. Together with the Town of North Hempstead, we will continue to provide the important services our residents depend upon,” said County Executive Mangano.

“The Town of North Hempstead is improving the quality of life of our seniors by creating opportunities for them to tap into critical services,” said North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman. “The funding provided by the County will enhance our transportation services for seniors.”

Nassau County will receive $724,275 from the FTA and $90,534 from the New York State Department of Transportation, along with an additional $90,534 for grant administration. These funds will be used to reimburse the Town of North Hempstead for the purchase of the new buses, minus administrative costs.
