Mangano Awards $160,000 To Village Of Valley Stream For Downtown Revitalization And Neighborhood Improvements

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced today the allocation of a $160,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to the Village of Valley Stream. The grant will fund a variety of projects in the Village, including downtown parking and streetscape improvements. CDBG money will also go towards assisting low and moderate-income homeowners with home improvements in order to ensure code compliance.

“The Community Development Block Grant program has long provided funding for projects that improve the quality of life for thousands of Nassau County residents. These funds will greatly assist the Village of Valley Stream in their efforts to enhance local businesses, spur job creation and improve infrastructure,” said County Executive Mangano. “It’s a great day when Nassau County can utilize Federal funds to truly help revitalize our local neighborhoods.”

The CDBG Program is a Federal entitlement program that provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs. The Nassau County Office of Community Development annually issues a Notice of Funding Availability and accepts application from member municipalities and other eligible applicants for CDBG grant-funded activities.

Allocations for the Village of Valley Stream include:

  • $150,000 for downtown parking and streetscape improvements, including but not limited to, engineering design, construction and inspection to improve the environment for very low, low, and moderate income households

  • $10,000 to maintain the stock of affordable housing by the provision of loans and/or grants to low and moderate income homeowners in order to eliminate code violations and make other needed home improvements with eligible rehabilitation and preservation activities

CDBG funds and program income can be used for a variety of activities related to housing, economic development, commercial revitalization, public services, infrastructure, and public facilities. An estimated 90% of CDBG funds are used annually to benefit extremely low, low and moderate income individuals.
