Mangano Announces 2012 US Challenge Cup To Be Held On The Red Course At Eisenhower Park

Course Named “Four Stars Best Places to Play” by Golf Digest

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano has announced that the Eisenhower Park Red Course will host the US Challenge Cup and its Long Island Junior Championship on Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th at 11:00 a.m.

Held on Eisenhower Parks Red Course, US Challenge Cup participants will play a course with a championship history that dates back to 1926, when it hosted the PGA Championship. More recently, the Eisenhower Park Red Course has held events for the PGA Champions Tour and has received praise as “one of the better and one of the toughest courses we play” from PGA golfer Lee Trevino. Included in Golf Digests “Four Stars Best Places to Play 2008/2009,” the par-72 course measures 7,107 yards from the championship tees, 6,416 yards from the middle tees, and 5,470 yards from the forward tees.

The United States Challenge Cup, founded in 1980 and formally established in 1983, is a non-profit charitable organization formed to perpetuate the growth of junior golf. They provide young people with opportunities to further themselves in and through the game of golf, under the direction of a well-organized and administered program. The foundation offers: instructional opportunities through local PGA golf professionals, a junior mini-tour for novice to intermediate players, 23 major competitions, and chances to qualify for 6 of the world's top junior events as well as two of New England's premiere amateur tournaments. Each year the foundation continues to participate in numerous charitable events and has raised over $100,000 to support the efforts of groups like the USGA Centennial Amateur, the Hasbro Children's Hospital, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, the Button Hole Short Course, the RI Interscholastic League, and the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund.

Golf at Eisenhower Park consists of three 18-hole courses including the championship Red and White courses, along with the Blue course, as well as a driving range with 60 bays. Centrally located in Nassau County, Eisenhower Park is the flagship of the Nassau County parks system. The park offers a variety of recreational opportunities, including a swimming pool and fitness center at the world-class Nassau County Aquatic Center; mini-golf; a batting cage; athletic fields; playgrounds; a 2-mile fitness trail; basketball and tennis courts; bocci and lawn bowling; and the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre.
