The public should be advised that they should obtain a copy of their credit report from all three of the above-referenced credit bureaus. According to state and federal law, the public is entitled to request a report from each bureau once a year for free.
- You should file a report with your local police precinct for identity theft so that the matter can be investigated and documented. Ask for a copy of the police report in case you are asked to supply such by bank, credit card company, or elsewhere. You might ask the credit reporting agencies if a copy of the report, or at least its file number, could be made part of the agency's records.
- If your Social Security number has been misused, you may also wish to speak with the Social Security Administration regarding the possibility of the occurrence of Social Security fraud:
