MANGANO ENCOURGES LOCAL EMPLOYERS TO
PARTICIPATE IN THE COUNTY’S SUBSIDIZED EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM

Assists residents in obtaining new skills, training and education

Mineola, NY - County Executive Edward P. Mangano urges Nassau County business owners to take advantage of the new Subsidized Employment Program (SEP). The Nassau County Department of Social Services (DSS) was awarded a $ 1.2 million dollar performance grant through New York State to provide education, training and subsidized job placements for 200 eligible participants involving health care, transitional employment and “Green” jobs.

“Too many Nassau County residents have been negatively impacted by the economy and now find themselves unemployed,” said County Executive Mangano. “By providing additional training and education, we are assisting people in obtaining a new skill set which will make individuals more marketable during these uncertain times.”

DSS is seeking local employers who are willing to hire trained participants to register for this program. Employers would be eligible to receive a wage subsidy for up to 12 weeks which can be a significant cost savings to local businesses. To date, 103 people have been placed through the Subsidized Employment Program throughout Nassau County. Placements include day care centers, assisted living and nursing home facilities, mental health agencies and several “green” businesses.

Social Services Commissioner John Imhof added, “This truly is a unique opportunity and tremendous benefit to businesses throughout Nassau County. Interested employers can complete a job order form describing their employment needs and DSS will work on matching those needs with qualified candidates.”

“Green” job training includes energy conservation, retrofitting, recycling, janitorial and waste management and weatherization. Many of the other candidates have backgrounds in data entry, retail and customer service, carpentry, bookkeeping, custodial, and electrical experience.
