Mangano Raises Awareness on Family & Domestic Violence

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced today that he has reached out to all religious leaders in Nassau County requesting they set aside a sermon in October to spread the message, “Violence is Not the Answer.” The request comes as the County Executive prepares for the Domestic Violence Awareness Ceremony to be held Today, Tuesday October 4th to honor and remember the victims of domestic violence. Additionally, the dome of the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building will be illuminated purple this evening as part of Nassau County’s Domestic Violence Awareness campaign.

“I am very concerned about the number of individuals and families affected by family and domestic violence,” stated County Executive Mangano. “We are doing what we can to reduce this growing public health crisis.”

In a letter to all clergy dated September 13, 2011, County Executive Mangano stated that family and domestic violence is a “serious public health issue” and “my administration remains committed to ensuring that we take all steps possible to reduce the incidence of family and domestic violence in Nassau County.” Letters to the clergy included informational brochures which lists important phone numbers for anyone needing further assistance and highlights the signs and symptoms of family and domestic violence.

“We want people to hear the message that violence of any kind will not be tolerated in our County,” added County Executive Mangano. “Hearing the message “Violence is Not the Answer” from local religious leaders is very powerful.”

Last year Mangano sent a similar letter to the faith-based community leaders recognizing the important role they play in spreading the message that “Violence is Not the Answer.” The response from the clergy and community was very positive as so many individuals and families turn to their faith-based communities for guidance and answers.
