MANGANO TO ADDRESS SECOND REGIONAL CONFERENCE
ON FAMILY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AT LIU POST

Brookville, NY – Fulfilling a commitment to combat family and domestic violence, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano will address the Second Regional “Many Faces of Family Violence” conference on Friday, April 20th at LIU Post in Brookville from 8:15 am to 1:00 pm.

County Executive Mangano will deliver the Welcome Address to the conference, which is sponsored in partnership with Long Island University (LIU). Expressing gratitude to Dr. David Steinberg, President of LIU for hosting this important event, he said, “We cannot achieve our goals without partners such as Long Island University. Their involvement and support in promoting awareness is critical.”

With a goal of raising public awareness regarding domestic violence and its impact on children and families, County Executive Mangano appointed a distinguished panel in 2010 to serve on the County Executive’s Family Violence Task Force. Chaired by Social Services Commissioner Dr. John Imhof, the Task Force outlined ten recommendations to combat this serious public health issue.

The conference, the second in a series that focuses on the recommendations of the Task Force, will feature Dr. Eileen Treacy, consultant and expert witness in Family and Criminal Court on sexual assault cases, as the Keynote Speaker. In addition, several workshops are planned throughout the morning to address different aspects of family violence. Dr. Imhof will be joined by Suffolk County Department of Social Services Commissioner Gregory Blass, who chairs the Suffolk County Task Force on Family Violence.

County Executive Mangano, who became New York State’s first County Executive to declare that “family and domestic violence are public health emergencies that threaten the lives of children and other family members,” stressed the importance of reducing violence in our communities.

“We are dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families that are coping with family violence and will continue working towards raising public awareness. This second conference is another major step forward in our efforts,” said County Executive Mangano.
