Water Quality Foreword

This report is issued pursuant to the requirements of Section 33-0714 of the Environmental Conservation Law (ECL), which requires a water quality monitoring program to detect and assess pesticide contamination of ground and surface waters on Long Island and throughout New York State. The Nassau County Department of Health has been participating in this program since 1998 in cooperation with the Suffolk County Department of Health Services (SCDHS) which oversees the Long Island pesticide monitoring program. This document presents information for the sampling, performed from July 2001 through January 2002.

This report was prepared by the Division of Environmental Health, Bureau of Environmental Protection, Office of Water Supply Regulation. The report was originally written by Louis J. Famiglietti, Chief, Office of Data Management and Compliance, who retired in September 2002. The report was later revised and completed by Donald Irwin, Public Health Sanitarian II and Carol Johnson, Public Health Sanitarian I. Sampling the of the public supply wells was performed by William Provoncha and Paul Young, Public Health Sanitarians. Samples were delivered to and analyzed by the SCDHS laboratory in Hauppauge.

Monitoring of Nassau County public supply wells was done in cooperation with Martin Trent, Project Manager, Bureau of Groundwater Resources, SCDHS and Kenneth Hill, Laboratory Director, SCDHS.

This report is part of the Nassau County Department of Health's continuing programs in public water supply monitoring and protection, which are under the supervision of Michael Alarcon, P.E., Director, Bureau of Environmental Protection, and Susan G. King, Director, Division of Environmental Health.
