Legislator Abrahams Announces “Operation Safe Stop”

Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead) announced that the Nassau County Police Department is participating in the State of New York Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee “Operation Safe Stop” on Wednesday, March 30, 2011. “Operation Safe Stop” is geared to educating driver’s that passing a stopped school bus is a violation of New York State Law. A state grant will supplement additional patrols throughout all of Nassau County’s eight precincts during this enforcement initiative.

Motorists should be aware that the first-time fine for illegally passing a stopped school bus is a minimum of $250.00 and 5 points on your driver’s license. A second conviction within 3 years results in a minimum fine of $600.00. A third or subsequent conviction within 3 years results in a minimum fine of $750.00.
