Abrahams Wants Tougher Sex Offender Monitoring Law

Proposes Hotel/Motel Employee Screening Requirements

Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead) was joined today by Laura Ahearn the executive director of Parents for Megan’s Law; Legislators Judy Jacobs, Dave Denenberg, and Robert Troiano; Mindy Perlmutter, executive director of the Nassau Coalition Against Domestic Violence at The Safe Place; Silvia Finkelstein, Nassau County Assistant District Attorney Special Victims Unit, representatives from both the Child Advocacy Center and the Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center to announce his proposal that would toughen the County’s sex offender monitoring law.

Legislator Abrahams said, “My proposal would require all operators of hotels and motels to check the NY State Sex Offender Registry to determine whether any current employee or any prospective employee is listed. If the person is registered with the NY State Sex Offender Registry, the hotel/motel operator must limit the sex offender’s duties and contact with patrons including prohibiting the sex offender from having access to keys and guest rooms and from working events that entail direct contact with children. I urge bi-partisan support of my bill. If we enact this tougher measure we will be taking a major step forward in the ongoing effort to protect Nassau County residents and visitors from the horror of sex offenses."

"Keys grant access and access implies trust. Convicted sex offenders have demonstrated that they cannot be trusted and legislative action is needed to protect our most vulnerable," added Laura Ahearn.

After the press conference, Legislator Abrahams and Laura Ahearn were accompanied by Legislators Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury), Dave Denenberg (D-Merrick) and Robert Troiano (D-Westbury) to the Legislature’s Clerk’s Office where the bill was official filed.
