January 9, 2008
By now, you should have received a letter advising you of the new “tentative assessed value” for 2008-2009. As part of the ongoing reassessment process, the County Assessor has once again revised the assessed value on your home. Unless challenged, this new assessed value will be used to determine your taxes beginning with the October 2008 school tax bill.
You have a legal right to challenge the new assessed value. If you believe your new assessed value is too high, I encourage you to exercise this right.
The period during which you may file a legal challenge (grievance) begins on January 2, 2008 and ends on March 3, 2008. Grievance applications, as well as a publication containing procedures for contesting your assessment are available at the Nassau County Department of Assessment, 240 Old Country Road, 4th Floor, Mineola, 11501. The Department phone number is 516-571-1500. Moreover, information regarding tax challenges, as well as an application that may be filed online may be found at www.nassaucountyny.gov/arc. You may view information regarding comparable property values at www.mynassauproperty.com.
If you are unable to get through to the Department of Assessment, I urge you to call my office at 516-571-6209. My Legislative Aide Peter will assist you in obtaining the forms and getting the information you need.
