Jacobs Applauds LIRR's Decision to Address Gap Safety Issues at Syosset Station

Calls Station Improvements a ‘Good Start’

Nassau County Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) today applauded actions taken by the Long Island Railroad to remedy the gap problem at the Syosset station. The large gap at the station between the platform and the train, at more than 13 inches in certain places, has been responsible for 39 incidents where people fell into the gap since 1989.

Jacobs has been calling for the gap at Syosset to be fixed since last August when an 18-year old girl slipped into the gap at the Woodside station and was killed. Syosset’s gap is so pronounced due to the curved nature of the platform.

        

“I am pleased that the Long Island Railroad is finally taking steps to fix a dangerous situation for our residents,” Jacobs said. “I have been saying for months that a solution was needed to prevent another incident and this is a good start. For the safety of our commuters, I am glad the Railroad is listening.”

       

The Long Island Railroad will now have employees wearing yellow vests offering assistance to any commuter who needs it during peak travel times in the morning and evenings. Ramps will also be available on trains that bridge the gap between platform and train car.
