Bethpage Resident Nancy O’Neill Named

Trailblazer in the New Millennium 17th Legislative District 2013 Honoree

Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker honored long-time Bethpage resident, Nancy O’Neill for her volunteer work in Long Beach and Island Park after Sandy unleashed it’s fury on our island.

Witnessing the devastation first-hand, Nancy posted Facebook requests for food, clothing, and toiletries. Nancy then loaded her SUV and, with the help of her children, Cristin and Joseph, made deliveries to the communities of Long Beach and Island Park.  Through donations from family, friends and strangers, Nancy collected pet supplies for the Town of North Hempstead Shelter, 125 jackets for NYC Cares, 75 art smocks for the Island Park SD, nearly 1000 gifts for IP students from Pre-K – 6th grade, and over 900 pounds of food and toiletries mostly donated to Island Harvest.

Nancy also assisted the Bethpage Assembly of God Church in a renovation mission, helping residents with insufficient insurance. She could be found tearing down walls, pulling up rugs and floor boards, hauling insulation, furniture and appliances out of these homes.  As if this was not enough, when gas lines suddenly froze, Nancy secured and delivered 9 space heaters to families without heat.

Her current project is a “Halloween in Spring” party for the Island Park children, collecting costumes, candy and goodie bags.  Nancy hopes that her children will mirror her actions and help others when needed.  She says “helping others is what community is all about”.
