Contacting Credit Agencies

If you have been the victim of Identity Theft you should immediately contact the three major Credit Reporting Agencies listed below. Inform them that you want to place a Fraud Alert on your file and that as a victim of Fraud you are entitled to a free credit report. Request that they send you a copy of the report. Once received review it carefully for any discrepancies.

• A Consumer's Guide to Identity Theft is a government site  run by the Federal Trade Commission. It provides information about identity theft, including informative statistics. They also take complaints from consumers who have been victimized.
• The Identity Theft Resource Center is an affiliate of the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse. Their site has alot of information about Identity theft including Consumer Alerts and Important Legislation. The United States Secret Service not only protects the President of the United States but they are also charged with investigating Financial Crimes associated with Financial Institutions. Their investigations may include Bank Fraud, Access device Fraud, computer fraud, and more. They do not normally investigate cases that involve small dollar amounts. Since Identity Theft crimes often involve the mail, the U.S. Postal Inspectors are tasked with investigating those cases. If you wish to file a complaint contact your local Inspector. The Internet Fraud Complaint Center works with the FBI and National White Collar Crime Center. Their site provides statistics and allows victims to file a complaint.
• The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse provides information about Identity Theft, as well as, Financial Privacy and Internet Privacy Information. Their site contains numerous Publications to help assist victims.
