Unlicensed Contractor Sting Operation

The Home Improvement industry, at times, is wrought with fraud and deception. Dishonest and unlicensed contractors take advantage of unsuspecting consumers. “Today, the Office of Consumer Affairs (OCA) in a joint operation with the Nassau County Police Department, seized 7 vehicles from 9 home improvement contractors,” declared Roger C. Bogsted, Commissioner of OCA.
One of the unlicensed contractors, wanted in 3 states, was immediately arrested by 5th Precinct police officers and was extradited to Virginia to stand trial. In addition to the seized vehicles, the Consumer Affairs operation netted in excess of $10,000 in fines.

Homeowners seeking licensing information on a contractor should call the Consumer Affairs Hotline at 516-571-2600. Not only can you find out whether the contractor is licensed, but staff members can give you a six-year history of complaints and resolutions as well.
“We are here to help and protect our homeowners in Nassau County and those contractors that skirt the law will receive prompt appropriate penalties,” Bogsted said.
