Consumer Affairs Commissioner Roger C. Bogsted today announced a crackdown on the display and sale of pornographic material to underage children.
In a joint operation, The Office of Consumer Affairs and the Nassau County Police Department’s 5th Precinct targeted over a dozen stores in Nassau County. The stores were known to prominently display pornographic magazines and videos in violation of local law. In some stores, shoppers were forced to walk past a wall of pornography to access the refrigerated milk, juice, and soda.
“There will be zero tolerance for convenience stores that sell so-called ‘adult material’ to the children of Nassau County,” Bogsted said. “This is a very important issue, and we will not allow unscrupulous store owners to place our kids in jeopardy. In one case, a sales clerk sold a pornographic magazine to a young boy even after he told the clerk that he was only 15.
In total, the operation yielded 3 arrests for selling adult material to a minor, 1 arrest for selling alcohol to 2 minors, and 3 summonses for Unconscionable Trade Practices totaling $3500. Summonses were also issued to 11 stores for the Improper Display of Adult Material resulting in fines of $5500.
