Laura Curran began her first term in the Nassau County Legislature in January, 2014. She proudly serves the 5th Legislative District, which includes most of Baldwin, all of South Hempstead, and parts of Freeport, Rockville Centre, Merrick, and Oceanside.
Laura came to public service after a career as a reporter at both the New York Daily News and the New York Post. At the Daily News, she covered education, politics, and crime, and was often among the first reporters at breaking news scenes. Her reporting also took her far from New York, including to Los Angeles to cover the O. J. Simpson civil trial. At the Post, Laura specialized in in-depth features, and wrote about many of the Long Islanders killed in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. She was also an adjunct professor of journalism at SUNY Purchase.
Laura served on the Baldwin Board of Education from 2011 to 2014, where she worked hard, amid tightening budget constraints, to ensure that every student had the opportunity receive a solid, well-rounded education.
Laura is a member of the Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, the Baldwin Civic Association, and serves on the board of directors of REFIT, an Island-wide education advocacy organization, and also teaches yoga in Baldwin and Rockville Centre. She earned her B.A. in Liberal Arts at Sarah Lawrence College, and lives in Baldwin with her husband, an attorney, and their three daughters, aged 6, 8, and 13.
