Ellen Birnbaum is serving her first term as Legislator for the 10th District which includes Great Neck, Herricks, North Hills, North New Hyde Park and Searingtown/Albertson. She is a lifelong resident of Nassau County and a 32 year resident of Great Neck. Ellen has devoted her career to public service. Prior to being elected to the Legislature, Ellen served as the Director of the Office of Intermunicipal Coordination (OIC) for the Town of North Hempstead where she worked in various capacities for the past 17 years. As Director of OIC, Ellen helped the villages, schools and special districts within the Town save money for taxpayers through shared services and cooperative projects. She also convened many conferences regarding important issues affecting our community such as hurricane preparedness, airplane noise abatement, and opposition to police precinct closings. She has worked extensively on constituent services such as tree trimming, pothole repair, street signage and road drainage. She has also served as a Director of the Water Authority of Great Neck North.

Ellen is concerned about domestic abuse and violence and has developed programs to educate the public about the dangers of, and remedies for, relationship abuse and bullying. She is a trained facilitator in anti-bullying with Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) and has conducted numerous workshops for middle school students. Ellen also is concerned with the care of senior citizens who wish to remain in their own homes and has been involved with Project Independence. She plans on taking an active role on the Committee on Veterans and Senior Affairs.

Ellen is very involved with several groups in her community. She is the Vice-President of Membership and a former President of the Lulav Group of Hadassah and has been honored with their Myrtle Wreath award. Ellen is also an active member of Temple Israel of Great Neck where she has served on numerous committees, the Board of Trustees and as past president of the Couples Club. She is a founding member of the Great Neck Rotary Band and has also been an elected member of the Nominating Committee of the Great Neck Public Library.

Ellen holds a B.S. in Consumer Economics and Public Policy from Cornell University. She is an involved member of the alumni association and each year interviews high school students who apply to Cornell. She also has an MBA in Finance from New York University. She will utilize her strong background in finance to ask the probing questions to address the County’s record high debt, fee increases, and will ensure your tax dollars are spent properly.

Ellen and her husband Mark, a former trustee of the Village of Great Neck and current Village Justice are the proud parents of three adult children - Deborah, Jonathan, and Laura.
